Austin and the state of Texas already have laws and statutes preventing animal cruelty, abuse, abandonment, animal fighting for profit, neglect, and other offenses. The penalties for these crimes range from citations to felony charges. To learn more about state laws, go to Texas Humane Legislative Network (THLN).
Currently in Austin, the laws are going unheeded and charges are rarely brought. Calls from citizens to 311 or the police rarely result in change, to such a degree that most people give up trying.
What follows are a few of the many many cases of animal abuse that have occurred in Austin. We didn’t have to go far to find them as the animals were sitting right in our own city pound, where the officer in charge of animal abuse could easily have done something to help.
We are keeping track of these cases in hopes that these animals will be remembered for the inspiration and motivation they have brought to so many to change the way Austin sees the helpless in their midst.
